The flowers of the blue malva contain a blue pigment that was once used as a natural blue rinse for greying hair before chemicals were commonly used. Blue malva, like all mallows, relieves inflammation and has soothing qualities. It is also great for removing yellow & brassy tones in Blonde Hair.
You can make this simple hair rinse with just water or add in some Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) to condition your hair, also great if you are transitioning to a natural shampoo bar.
With its natural cooling properties and mucilage, blue malva is excellent as an emollient for dry skin and sun. It is also mildly astringent and helps with psoriasis, eczema, boils, abscesses, and wounds. The flower can be steeped into a tea and great for giving grey hair a more silver look. This plant—whether used as an extract or steeped in a tea—has several positive attributes to one’s scalp and hair.
Our dried blue malva flowers come in a brown paper bag 15g – enough for at least 3 x 150ml bottles.
How to make your Purple Hair Rinse
In a measuring jug – safe for boiled water:
- Add 2 Tablespoons of Dried Blue Malva flowers to 150ml of boiled water.
- Leave to steep for 10 – 15 minutes. You will see it’s ready when the water has turned purple – the longer you leave the stronger the colour will be.
- Remove herbs by straining through a fine sieve, muslin/cheesecloth and allow to cool.
- I then add 2-3 spoonfuls of Apple Cider Vinegar and you can add a couple of drops of essential oil such as orange, lemon, rosemary etc. You can also mix with our botanical hair rinses.
- I use a Spray Bottle to spray into my hair after shampooing, I then leave in for 5-10 minutes and then rinse. Again you can leave in for longer.
I use mine every time I wash my hair but you can use once a week, once a fortnight to brighten your hair. You can also pour the rinse over your hair after conditioning and leave-in without rinsing.

Other Blue Malva Properties
Mallows are humble and gentle herbs, soothing and cooling in nature. The whole herb including roots, leaves, flowers and seeds are useful and edible and in previous times were commonly eaten as vegetables. The flowers are particularly useful as a soothing gargle or tea for afflictions of the throat, such as hoarseness or a tickling cough. Mallow flowers make a lovely and colourful addition to bathwater, not only giving it a tint of purple/blue, but will also add their soothing and softening qualities for the benefit of the skin.
